Self Driving Cars Pros and Cons 2019
Self Driving Cars: Consider the Pros and Cons
From the looks of it, self driving cars are almost here. Some are already on the road being tested, to not-always good results. Proponents say, when they’re perfected autonomous vehicles will get us where we want to go without the stress of having to actually drive. Detractors say that relying on technology to always work is a dangerous proposition.
Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of self driving cars.
Pros
- Someday when self driving cars are perfected, deaths due to crashes could be reduced. It could mean the elimination of accidents caused by human error such as drunk driving, speeding and distracted driving.
- Fewer traffic accidents could bring health care costs down.
- Driverless cars could make lives easier. While your car is in control you can concentrate on other things like reading, making phone calls and so forth.
- Time on the road, gas usage and traffic jams could be decreased.
- People who don’t like to drive or are unable to would be better served.
- A car could find its own parking space, so you don’t have to.
Cons
- There could be a risk of cars being hacked, which means someone else would able to reprogram and control your car.
- A car’s GPS system or directional programming could be compromised, making the car unusable.
- Computer glitches could cause accidents.
- The cost of automobiles in general could be substantially more expensive. With so much dependence on technologies, repairing a car could be costlier.
- Some people worry about privacy issues and are concerned that a driverless car’s computer system could collect passenger data such as credit card information and even keep track of everything that occurs in the car.
- Driving in bad weather could be a big issue and a human’s input would be required.
- There would be a transition period where both driverless and regular human-driven cars are on the road, so more accidents would still be an issue.
Someday, driverless cars could be beneficial, but a lot of kinks need to be ironed out in order to avoid dangerous situations on the road. Some people may never be willing to fully put their trust in an autonomous vehicle. The insurance and legal landscapes would be altered, as would car manufacturing and employment opportunities in the auto industry.
In many ways, a future where most people depend on driverless cars is hard to imagine. But the world is heading in that direction and autonomous cars are definitely on their way. It’s just a matter of time. If you need auto insurance, please go to EINSURANCE.com.
