New Years Car Insurance Resolutions
Every year we make resolutions – to eat healthier, to work out more, to spend more time with family and friends… Well, don’t forget to put assessing your car insurance needs on that list of resolutions. Certainly protecting yourself and your family deserves to be on that list.
Auto insurance generally provides several different types of coverage. Your first resolution should be determining what coverages you have. You probably have physical damage coverage – which covers damage to your vehicle in the event of an accident. [Resolution – make sure you have high enough limits to cover damage to your current vehicles if there was a total loss.] You probably also have liability insurance, as it is required by law. Liability insurance protects others in the event that you cause an accident in which others are injured. But, you may not realize that liability insurance also protects you. First, it protects you by paying the cost of your defense if you are sued by third-parties that are injured in the accident. [Resolution – make sure your auto liability policy requires your insurer to provide you a defense if you are sued. If it does not, you should immediately begin searching for affordable auto insurance that contains this coverage]. Second, liability insurance protects you because it pays damages to third-parties that are injured in a car accident caused by you. If you didn’t have insurance, or didn’t have enough insurance, those injured people could sue you for damages. [Resolution – determine the amount of liability insurance you currently have. Is this enough to protect your assets in the event of an accident?] If you caused the accident, you could end up quite in debt paying legal fees as well as damages. Therefore, you want to make sure to assess your current auto insurance and determine whether it currently meets your needs.
A third way that the liability coverage indirectly benefits you is the higher the liability limits of our policy, the higher the uninsured motorist coverage you are entitled to. [Resolution – determine whether you have uninsured motorist coverage. If for some reason you opted to decline such coverage, rethink this decision immediately. This coverage truly protects you.] Uninsured motorist coverage is insurance for you and your family. What if someone that is driving without insurance causes an accident in which you or your family is injured? Or, what if the person has insurance, but with the lowest required limits, which don’t come even close to covering the costs you’ve incurred due to the accident? Uninsured motorist coverage covers you and your passengers if someone else causes an accident and doesn’t have enough insurance to cover your damages. Therefore, uninsured motorist coverage is very important. You’ll want to make sure that you have it and that you have high enough limits that you are comfortable with. Uninsured motorist coverage is available to you at the same limits of your liability coverage. Thus, the higher your liability limits, the higher your uninsured motorist coverage limits.
After you’ve considered what coverage you have and what your needs are, now is the time to search for discount auto insurance online. You can obtain cheap auto insurance quotes for the coverages and limits you need. You may be surprised – you may not have to pay much more than what you are currently paying now! The New Year is certainly the time to achieve your New Year’s resolutions. Don’t forget to assess your automobile insurance needs and search for affordable auto insurance.
